Words you'll see on this page

CMR / SMR: two ways hard drives store data. CMR is the one you want in a NAS. SMR is cheaper and can be very slow when rebuilding.
Off-lease: business computers returned after a few years and resold used, usually cheaply.
Refurbished: used gear that a seller has checked, cleaned, and resold, often with a short warranty.
VRAM: the memory on your graphics card. AI models load into it, so more VRAM means you can run bigger models.

New N100 boxes go on sale often, on Amazon and on AliExpress. Used ThinkCentre, OptiPlex, and EliteDesk units from refurb sellers are steady value year-round, and they're best bought when a seller adds a coupon.

Storage

SSDs and hard drives

SSD prices swing a lot, so buy on a dip, not on impulse. NAS hard drives go on sale around big shopping events. Buy them in pairs if you want a mirror.

Local AI

Graphics cards with enough VRAM

The RTX 3060 12GB is still the budget pick for local AI. Used RTX 3090s (24 GB) have climbed to around $1,200 on eBay as of October 2026, roughly double last winter, so they're no longer the easy bargain they were. New 12 to 16 GB cards tend to dip during sale events.

NAS

Beginner NAS boxes

Synology and UGREEN units usually see their best prices during major sales. If you're patient, wait for one. If not, they're rarely a bad buy at full price.

Deal traps to skip:

SMR hard drives sold as NAS drives. Get CMR.
No-name "16-core" mini PCs with weak chips inside.
"Refurbished" graphics cards with no return window.
